Woodson Branch Nature School
A nature-based, hands-on, predominantly outdoor K–8 alternative school in the Appalachian Mountains. Practiced project-based learning through regenerative agriculture, eco-arts, outdoor education, and STEAM.
The Need
Families in this rural Appalachian region were seeking an educational option that honored childhood development, connection to land, and meaningful, hands-on learning.
How I Responded
I founded and led Woodson Branch Nature School as part of a broader nonprofit community learning and resilience model, designing both the educational framework and operational systems.
Key Outcomes

Trailhead Community Farm School
A year-round, therapeutic, experiential education program in Upstate South Carolina, designed to provide academic and therapeutic support for neurodivergent students and their families.
The Need
Families lacked accessible educational options for neurodivergent children. The founding team had vision and commitment but needed guidance navigating school startup.
How I Responded
I supported Trailhead through hands-on startup consultation, advising their board, hosting a Woodson Branch tour, and providing guidance, sample language, and working documents.

Healing Roots Online School
A hybrid K–12 model nurturing social and emotional well-being through live virtual classes integrated with in-person, experiential learning beyond the screen.
The Need
During COVID-19, families urgently needed options that didn't require children to spend entire days on screens — while preserving connection to nature, peers, and caring adults.
How I Responded
I supported Healing Roots in developing a functional hybrid education model and played a key role in their hiring process, identifying educators aligned with their unique approach.

Madison County Community Learning Centers
A nonprofit community learning and resilience hub in rural Appalachia with four branches: K–8 Alternative Education, Farm & Food Systems, Community Resilience, and All-Ages Workshops.
The Need
Rural Appalachian communities face gaps in education, childcare, and emergency resources. When crisis comes — whether COVID or Hurricane Helene — those gaps widen quickly.
How I Responded
I built and led a community learning environment that remained steady through uncertainty. During Hurricane Helene, we launched the Lighthouse Project — opening our doors to ALL children in the area to continue learning, contribute, and heal.

- ✦Functioned as both a school and a community resilience hub
Hot Springs Community Preschool
A county-subsidized nonprofit preschool, after-school program, homeschool support, and summer camps in a deeply rural Appalachian community — accessible to all income levels.
The Need
Limited access to early childhood education, particularly for working families. Preschool options were scarce and affordability was a major barrier.
How I Responded
Under the MCCLC model, I founded and led a 5-star licensed, nature-based preschool for ages 3–5, plus after-school care, homeschool support, and summer camps for ages 3–12.
Key Outcomes

- ✦5-star licensed facility
- ✦Very low staff turnover, reflecting healthy workplace culture
